Bistek Tagalog

Filipino beef steak in soy sauce and calamansi

Bistek Tagalog is a Filipino classic whose name comes from the Spanish “bistec”. It shows the colonial influence in a distinctly Filipino interpretation.

Thin beef slices are marinated in soy sauce and tangy calamansi juice, gently braised and served with soft, sautéed onion rings.

Ingredients

  • Beef, thinly sliced500 g
  • Soy sauce4 tbsp
  • Calamansi or lemon juice3 tbsp
  • Onions, in rings2
  • Garlic4 cloves
  • Black pepper1 tsp
  • Cooked riceto serve

Preparation

  1. Marinate the beef in soy sauce, calamansi and pepper.

  2. Sauté the onion rings in oil until translucent, remove.

  3. Sear the beef in the same oil.

  4. Pour in the marinade and braise gently until tender.

  5. Serve with the onion rings and rice.
