Ven Pongal

South Indian creamy rice-and-lentil porridge

Pongal is a South Indian rice dish that also gives its name to the harvest festival. The savoury version is called ven pongal.

Rice and mung dal are cooked creamy and finished with a ghee-roasted tadka of pepper, cumin, ginger and cashews.

Ingredients

  • Rice200 g
  • Skinned mung dal100 g
  • Ghee3 tbsp
  • Black pepper & cumin1 tsp each
  • Ginger1 piece
  • Cashews2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves1 sprig

Preparation

  1. Toast the mung dal briefly, cook soft and creamy with rice and water.

  2. Heat ghee, roast the cashews golden in it.

  3. Bloom pepper, cumin, ginger and curry leaves in the ghee.

  4. Stir the tadka through the porridge.

  5. Serve with coconut chutney and sambar.
