Aloo Bhorta

Bengali mashed potato with mustard oil

Aloo bhorta is a simple, ubiquitous Bengali dish of mashed potato eaten with rice.

Raw onion, chili and a bold splash of mustard oil give the plain mash its characteristic, pungent character.

Ingredients

  • Potatoes500 g
  • Red onion1 piece
  • Green chili2 pieces
  • Mustard oil2 tbsp
  • Coriander1 bunch
  • Saltto taste

Preparation

  1. Boil the potatoes soft and peel.

  2. Very finely chop onion and chili.

  3. Mash the potatoes with mustard oil and salt.

  4. Mix in onion, chili and coriander.

  5. Shape into small mounds and serve with rice.
