Chicken Xacuti

Goan chicken curry with roasted coconut

Chicken xacuti is a complex Goan chicken curry with a dark sauce of roasted coconut and many spices.

Poppy seeds, dried chilies and mace give it its depth and earthy character.

Ingredients

  • Chicken pieces800 g
  • Grated coconut150 g
  • Dried red chilies6
  • Coriander, cumin & poppy seedssome of each
  • Onion & garlicsome of each
  • Tamarind1 tbsp

Preparation

  1. Roast coconut, chilies and spices dark.

  2. Grind to a paste with water.

  3. Fry the onions and add the paste.

  4. Stir in chicken and tamarind.

  5. Braise in the sauce until done.
