Bengali fish curry in yoghurt

Doi maach is a Bengali fish curry whose mild, lightly tangy sauce is based on yoghurt.

Spiced with cardamom, cinnamon and clove, it is regarded as a refined festive dish and served with rice.

Ingredients

  • Fish steaks (e.g. carp)500 g
  • Yoghurt200 g
  • Onion & gingersome of each
  • Cardamom, cinnamon & clovesome of each
  • Turmeric & chili powdersome of each
  • Mustard oil & saltsome of each

Preparation

  1. Briefly fry the fish with turmeric and salt.

  2. Fry onion and ginger in mustard oil.

  3. Add the whole spices.

  4. Carefully stir in whisked yoghurt, do not boil.

  5. Let the fish poach gently in the sauce, serve.
