Kadala Curry

Black chickpeas in roasted coconut sauce

Kadala curry is a Kerala curry of brown chickpeas in a dark, roasted coconut sauce.

It is classically eaten for breakfast with the thin rice pancake appam or puttu.

Ingredients

  • Brown chickpeas (kadala)250 g
  • Grated coconut100 g
  • Onion & tomatosome of each
  • Garam masala & chili powdersome of each
  • Curry leaves & mustard seedssome of each
  • Coconut oil2 tbsp

Preparation

  1. Soak the chickpeas overnight and cook soft.

  2. Roast coconut with spices dark and grind.

  3. Fry onion and tomato in coconut oil.

  4. Stir in chickpeas and coconut paste.

  5. Finish with a tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves.
