Mangalorean chicken curry with coconut

Kori gassi is a spicy chicken curry of the Bunt community from Mangalore on the Karnataka coast.

The sauce of roasted coconut and chili is traditionally served with soft hollow rice rolls.

Ingredients

  • Chicken pieces800 g
  • Grated coconut150 g
  • Dried red chilies6
  • Coriander & cumin seeds1 tsp each
  • Tamarind1 tbsp
  • Onion & garlicsome of each

Preparation

  1. Dry-roast the coconut, chilies and spices.

  2. Grind to a paste with a little water.

  3. Fry the onions and add the paste.

  4. Stir in chicken and tamarind.

  5. Braise in the coconut sauce until done.
