Eight-treasure rice porridge for the Laba festival

Laba zhou is a sweet Chinese porridge of many grains, beans and dried fruits.

It is traditionally made on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, the Laba festival.

Ingredients

  • Sticky rice & short-grain rice200 g
  • Mixed beans (azuki, mung)150 g
  • Millet & barley100 g
  • Dried dates & lotus seeds100 g
  • Peanuts & longansome of each
  • Sugar or rock sugarto taste

Preparation

  1. Soak the beans and grains overnight.

  2. Start with plenty of water.

  3. Simmer long and stir occasionally.

  4. Add dates, lotus seeds and peanuts.

  5. Cook to a porridge consistency and sweeten.
