Sri Lankan onion-chili paste

Lunu miris is a fiery Sri Lankan paste of red onion, chili flakes and lime.

Pounded in a mortar, it accompanies rice, hoppers and kiribath and gives every meal a sharp, fresh note.

Ingredients

  • Red onions2 pieces
  • Chili flakes2 tbsp
  • Lime juice2 tbsp
  • Maldive fish1 tbsp
  • Salt1 pinch

Preparation

  1. Coarsely chop the onions.

  2. Pound with chili flakes and salt in a mortar.

  3. Add Maldive fish and pound along.

  4. Season with lime juice.

  5. Serve with rice, hoppers or kiribath.
