Steamed rice dumplings with coconut and jaggery

Modak are steamed rice dumplings from Maharashtra, filled with grated coconut and jaggery, and considered the favourite food of the god Ganesha.

At the Ganesh Chaturthi festival they are prepared as a sacred offering in an artfully shaped teardrop form.

Ingredients

  • Rice flour200 g
  • Grated coconut150 g
  • Jaggery120 g
  • Cardamom1/2 tsp
  • Ghee & saltsome of each
  • Wateras needed

Preparation

  1. Cook coconut with jaggery and cardamom into a filling.

  2. Mix rice flour with boiling water into a soft dough.

  3. Form small dough cups.

  4. Load with filling and seal into teardrops.

  5. Steam about 12 minutes, serve with ghee.
