Japanese New Year soup with mochi

Ozoni is the traditional Japanese soup for the New Year, centred on grilled or boiled mochi rice cakes.

Every region has its own version; in the Kanto area the broth is a clear dashi soup with chicken and vegetables.

Ingredients

  • Mochi rice cakes4 pieces
  • Dashi broth1 l
  • Chicken200 g
  • Mitsuba & carrotsome of each
  • Soy sauce & mirinsome of each
  • Yuzu peelsome

Preparation

  1. Season the dashi with soy sauce and mirin.

  2. Cook the chicken and carrot in the broth.

  3. Grill or boil the mochi separately.

  4. Put mochi in the bowls and ladle broth over.

  5. Serve with mitsuba and yuzu peel.
