Pol Sambol

Sri Lankan coconut relish

Pol sambol is a Sri Lankan relish of freshly grated coconut, chili and lime, served with almost every meal.

Roasted chili powder and a little Maldive fish give it heat and depth; it pairs with rice, hoppers and bread.

Ingredients

  • Freshly grated coconut200 g
  • Chili powder2 tbsp
  • Red onion1 piece
  • Lime juice2 tbsp
  • Maldive fish1 tbsp
  • Salt1 pinch

Preparation

  1. Pound the onion and chili powder fine.

  2. Add the grated coconut and combine.

  3. Stir in Maldive fish and salt.

  4. Season with lime juice.

  5. Mix well and serve with rice or hoppers.
