Newari dumplings with syrup and sesame

Yomari are fig-shaped dumplings of the Newar people of Kathmandu, made for the harvest festival Yomari Punhi.

The rice flour shell encloses a filling of cane sugar syrup (chaku) and sesame.

Ingredients

  • Rice flour250 g
  • Cane sugar syrup (chaku)150 g
  • Sesame60 g
  • Grated coconut30 g
  • Warm wateras needed
  • Pinch of salt1 pinch

Preparation

  1. Knead rice flour with warm water into a supple dough.

  2. Mix chaku with toasted sesame and coconut.

  3. Shape the dough into small cups.

  4. Add the filling and close into a fig shape.

  5. Steam for about 15 minutes.
